As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,314 people, 552 households, and 342 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,147.0 people per square mile (441.2/km²). There were 635 housing units at an average density of 554.3 per square mile (213.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.17% White, 0.08% Native American, 0.38% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.46% of the population.
There were 552 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 36.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.89.
